Office Hours: M-F 2:40-3:30p.m. and by appointment.

 

Focus Population:   9-12 grade with strong interest in writing. Students should have some experience with journalism and publishing.

 

Course Description:   The students in the course will advance their journalistic skills, and create and produce an original high school publication.

 

Materials:   writing utensil, notebook or loose-leaf paper, three-ring binder or folder.

 

Objectives:   At the end of the course, students will be able to:

 

Standards:

            1A. Apply word analysis and vocabulary skills to comprehend selections.

            3C. Communicate ideas in writing to accomplish a variety of purposes.

            5A. Locate, organize, and use infor­ma­tion from various sources to answer questions, solve problems and communicate ideas.

            5B. Analyze and evaluate information acquired from various sources.

            5C. Apply acquired information, concepts and ideas to communicate in a variety of formats.

 

Assessments:

            Summative: Group Projects, Short Tests, Final Exam.

            Formative: Homework, Class Work, Essays, Quizzes.

 

Grading Scale:

A = 90-100%

B = 80-89%

C = 70-79%

D = 60-69%

F = 0-59%

 

Strategies:   Students will learn through modeling, discussion, cooperative learning activities, note taking, and the use of graphic organizers.

 

Skills:   To acquire, analyze, and report factual information through writing and images. Course involves critical thinking, decision making, research, analysis, and communication.
